Bespoke Tailoring
- a look at mens bespoke tailoring...

Here we take a look at Mens Bespoke Tailoring.

PLEASE NOTE: At this time we are currently NOT providing mens bespoke / made to measure suit tailoring services.

It's probably important before we go any further to clarify exactly what 'Bespoke Tailoring' involves, the difference between bespoke tailoring, and made to measure tailoring, and that bespoke tailoring is probably not the appropriate choice for everyone.

What is Bespoke tailoring?

There is often some confusion over the term bespoke tailoring an exactly what is involved and how it differs precisely to made to measure tailoring, so we think it's worth clarifying the difference.

The word bespoke itself comes from the word 'bespeak', to speak for something, and in tailoring terms translates into 'to give order for it to be made'. Traditionally speaking, bespoke tailoring is whereby a suit is made 'in-house' to order, based on a customers specifications and requirements without the use of a pre-existing pattern, compared to made to measure tailoring whereby the suit is typically produced off the premises using a standard-size pattern that fits the customer.

There is indeed a lot of crossover between these forms of tailoring, but essentially that is the main difference, bespoke tailoring is truly unique, whilst made to measure typically adjusts a pre-existing pattern to fit your size.

So if you're looking for something a bit more exquisite then a bespoke tailored suit might be the right option for you, as your suit can be made to your exact specifications and requirements, using the fabric of your choosing, which is usually hand-made and hand-cut.

Essentially a bespoke suit is designed from the ground upwards starting from a blank canvas, without the use of a pre-existing pattern, based on your choice of fabric and cut and style instructions to your exact specifications. There is nothing finer than the perfect fit and craftsmanship afforded by a fully bespoke tailored mens suit.

The Bespoke Tailoring process...

The bespoke tailoring process should begin with a detailed consultation with an expert tailor and cutter, who should listen to your requirements and specifications and take the process from there. Your measurements will be taken and paper pattern should be drafted based on your particular requirements which will then be cut by the cutter. Once your garments are cut, each item should then be passed on to an experienced tailor where the first process of bespoke tailoring will begin. At this point garments are usually loosely stitched without the finishing details such as pockets. These garments are then fitted on you at a later appointment, and then taken down and rebuilt depending on your requirements with regards to how the garments fit you and how comfortable they are.

Generally speaking, the garments are then remade and taken to the next stage which includes the finishing details and are once again refitted on you on a further appointment. After this second fitting, the items of clothing are usually finished and completed in preparation for a final fitting. All finishing takes place by hand, and this includes edge stitching, buttonholes and buttons and the padding of the lapels, and the sleeves are stitched into place and lining is added where appropriate all by hand, and the suit is finally pressed.

Bespoke suits usually involve many man hours and expertise craftsmanship from numerous different people during the process, all of which is overseen by the cutter. The whole process can take in the region of around two to three months, although depending on the availability of customers for their fittings, it is possible to complete a bespoke tailored suit in a quicker timeframe.

Benefits of bespoke tailoring..

The lifespan of bespoke tailored items is generally quite a bit longer than that of an 'off the peg' suit due to the attention to detail paid to the fitting process and the quality of the production process. And what's more, several centimetres of sufficient inlays should usually be put in place in your bespoke tailored suit to allow for adjustments later down the line.

Bespoke Tailors will usually keep the patterns for future reference, so that any further orders may not necessarily require all three fittings.

Because bespoke tailored suits are custom built and involve considerably more work than a made to measure suit, the craftsmanship and time obviously has to come at a price. But if you are looking for the perfect fit, and something exquisitely unique, then a bespoke suit may be just right for you.

And generally speaking you will usually find that a bespoke tailor recognises how special a bespoke tailored suit is they will go the extra mile in providing aftersales finishing care on bespoke suit packages, including repressing, brushing and any necessary repairs.
