Many luxury cruise liners have dress codes and standards for certain events, and specific restaurants on board ship, and will probably require for gentlemen and indeed young men and boys to be attired appropriately in formal wear.
Most cruise liners, particularly the more exclusive ones, tend to have a number of formal nights on a holiday where formal wear will need to be attired and strict dress code will have to be adhered to. As well as a number of less formal or informal nights whereby the dress code is a little more relaxed.
For cruises to warmer climates, such as the Caribbean or Mediterranean for instance, a lightweight white tuxedo jacket is normally the attire of choice these days.
If your cruise holiday has a Black Tie Do / Black Tie Dinner then a black dinner suit should be worn, comprising of a black dinner jacket, and black trousers with a satin stripe on the outside leg, and of course a black bow tie.
For less formal evenings, many cruise liners still require passengers to be attired in a dark lounge suit, so you may wish to consider that also.
