Like any special formal event, it's important to make sure that you are suitably attired - afterall, the last thing you would want is to stick out like a sore thumb, or even worse still, be denied entry!
As Royal Ascot is probably the most exclusive and prestigious event of the racing year, you shouldn't take any chances, and this is especially important if you have tickets to the Royal Enclosure, as being inappropriately or improperly attired for that area in particular is usually likely to see you denied entrance.
So if you've never been before, you're probably wondering exactly how to dress for Ascot. Well, let's take a look a closer look on how to dress for Ascot...
If you're lucky enough to have tickets for the Royal Enclosure at Royal Ascot, you should be aware that men are required to wear traditional morning dress (also referred to as 'morning wear' and 'top hat and tails'), and as mentioned above its imperative that you adhere to the dress code as no exceptions are likely to be made for an event such as Royal Ascot should you be inappropriately attired.
So, what exactly is Morning Dress or Morning Wear and what does it consist of you might well be asking. Well these are the terms used for attire worn by men for events such as a Wedding (generally the male wedding party - Groom, Best Man, the Grooms Father, and the Father of the Bride as well as any Ushers), Royal Ascot, Royal Garden Parties and other Royal invitations and occasions - for instance 'Trooping of the Colour'. This type of formalwear may also be worn at Society Memorial Services or Funerals.
So what should your Morning Wear for an event such as the Royal Enclosure at Royal Ascot consist of? Well, a black morning tailcoat is usually the norm for such events, although grey is also permissible. If wearing a black morning tailcoat, then the trousers worn should be either grey or black with pinstripes, and if wearing a grey tailcoat then the trousers should be a matching plain grey (i.e. not pinstriped).
A plain white shirt should be worn with white collars and cuffs, with roughly around about one inch of white cuff on display. Usually either a cravat or tie are perfectly acceptable neckwear for these events (but as always, its worth checking your invitation / tickets in case there are any specific instructions). If wearing a cravat, an elegant looking winged-collar shirt should be worn. A traditional morning wear formal waistcoat or backless waistcoat (vest) should also be worn, with grey being the traditional safe colour of choice, although we do have a huge range of exquisitely styled luxurious waistcoasts from the Peter Posh Hirewear range, giving you the chance to be a little more expressive.
As for top hats, grey coloured top hats are the norm when it comes to Ascot Wear, but there is no strict code usually, and black hats are usually fine, although its heartily recommended that you should avoid dressing completely and entirely in black Ascot Wear, after all its called morning dress and not mourning dress!
If you really wanted to go that extra mile, you could also finish the look off with a pair of grey lightweight gloves and even a walking cane for that added touch of finesse and class, although it must be noted we are unable to provide these items.
If you only have admission and access to the general public areas of Royal Ascot, then a smart suit should be sufficient enough if you don't feel like getting dressed up. But you can of course still dress in traditional morning wear, as per the Royal Enclosure - and why not do so - afterall, it's not everyday you get to go to Royal Ascot is it?
Please note that these are only general guidelines for dressing for such an occasion. Always check your invitation / tickets for any specific instructions. Our in store tailors and sales assistants will be delighted to offer their expertise and advice during a fitting appointment if you have any queries.
Fitting appointments are advisable and recommended especially if it involves more than one person as is often the case for hirewear, in order to ensure that you get the priority service and undivided attention that you deserve. Due to an increased demand for our hirewear range, fitting appointments are also indeed a requirement for Saturday fittings.
Don't forget that our three Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire based menswear stores in the East Midlands are open 6 days a week from Monday to Saturday (closed Wednesday afternoons), and we can assure you of a warm welcome.

However, please also note that we can easily obtain any item(s) of your choosing available in either range for hire for your big day as long as the item hasn't been deleted.
Please note that our shop in Eastwood is our main hirewear store and has the largest selection of hirewear available to view and try on.
Our Alfreton and Ilkeston stores in Derbyshire have a more limited range of hirewear stock to view and try on, but please don't forget we can obtain any item available from the Peter Posh and Cameron Ross Hirewear ranges for you to hire.
