In this section, we'll delve deeper into the School Prom, what they're all about, and more importantly we'll take a closer look at suitable promwear attire for guys (both men and boys) by exploring our collection of Prom Hire wear available from our East Midlands based menswear shops in the UK.
Suitable Prom Wear attire: What prom wear should I hire for my prom?
So, you may well be asking yourself many questions about prom suit hire such as...
"What kind of prom suit or prom jacket should I wear at my school prom?"
It may seem somewhat daunting at first with so many available options. However, we promise that choosing the right prom suit is probably easier than it might first seem!
We're sure you probably have some questions about choosing the right promwear and our available boys and young mens prom wear for hire. Hopefully here at Sanders Menswear, we can guide you through the process of choosing the perfect promwear outfit for your special night out.
Promwear is generally something that is hired, as it is an outfit that is only likely to be worn on the one occasion, so hiring promwear makes sense. With that in mind, let's take a look at the available Prom wear for hire options from Sanders Menswear.
School Proms are usually black tie formalwear events, and promwear for this event can consist of a number of different formal promwear options...
- Black tuxedo jacket / dinner jacket
(often called a 'tux' / 'tux jacket' for short) which are accompanied with matching tuxedo trousers (a tuxedo refers to the suit as a whole including the trousers). White Tuxedo's can sometimes be an option too, but are generally better suited to outdoor functions.
- with a Bow Tie and Cummerbund Set
to accompany your prom tuxedo jacket and trousers you could wear a stylish matching black bow tie and cummerbund set. Or, why not stand out from the crowd by adding a little splash of colour by going for a matching coloured bow tie and cummerbund set instead! This look is a modern and contemporary approach favoured by many prom-goers.
- Alternatively, a Stylish Waistcoat and Ruche Tie
An alternative option to wearing a bow tie and cummerbund set with your prom tuxedo is to wear a stylish coloured waistcoat and ruche tie instead. This is a more traditional and elegant approach.
- A third option is a Prom Suit that consists of...
A regular black evening suit with a dark / contrasting regular neck tie.
This look is a more basic approach, and may be better suited to those who may feel uncomfortable wearing any of the other options above. Whilst this kind of prom wear is less likely to make one stand out from the crowd, if executed well, it can look rather stylish and sophisticated.
Generally speaking there are no rules set in stone as to exactly what kind of prom wear should be worn at a school prom. That is unless your invitation details provide specific guidelines as to the kind of prom wear that should be worn, which you should always double check before hiring your prom outfit.
Here at Sanders Menswear, our experience has taught us to recognise that young ladies aren't the only ones who are keen to make an impression by choosing the right prom wear, its important to young men as well. It's important to dress to impress for your School Prom, but it's also important to not go too over the top, afterall you'd only want to stand out from the crowd for all the right reasons! So its a matter of careful balance, and with our in-store expertise we can help you in deciding what the right prom wear for you is.
We'd be delighted to help you choose your perfect prom suit and offer our expert help and advice at each of our hirewear / menswear shops across the East Midlands region.
The Peter Posh Prom Wear range...
Here at Sanders Menswear, we are proud stockists of the Peter Posh Prom Wear range - a fabulous collection of prom wear for men and boys featuring a stunning selection of prom suits, tuxedo's, waistcoats, cummerbunds and bow ties.

Prom Wear: Tuxedo's and Prom Suits
The Prom Tuxedo or Dinner Jacket is generally considered to be standard traditional formal prom wear attire for young men and boys for the School Prom, and looks elegant and sophisticated. As mentioned earlier Tuxedo refers to both the Tuxedo Jacket and matching Tuxedo Trousers, i.e. the suit as a whole.

Black Tuxedo's are usually worn, however, white tuxedo's can also be an option to consider, particularly if your prom event is being held outdoors. However, we recommend checking your invitation first before choosing a white tuxedo. The black tuxedo is usually a safer option.
A regular black evening suit can be worn with a regular dark contrasting neck tie as an alternative to the Tuxedo, and whilst this might be slightly less glamorous than a tuxedo, if carefully selected it can look rather suave and sophisticated. Generally, we think the Prom Tuxedo is the best option, but this is a good option for those who perhaps wouldn't feel too comfortable dressing up. As we've said previously, it is worthwhile that you just check a regular evening suit with regular neck tie is a viable option for your school prom before deciding.
Prom Wear: Waistcoats
A wide-selection of prom waistcoat styles and colours are available from the Peter Posh Promwear collection.
If you don't fancy wearing a matching bow-tie and cummerbund set, then a stylish waistcoat with a bow tie or ruche tie is a really good alternative, and for some may be a first-choice option, providing more individuality whilst still remaining stylish and elegant.
Prom Wear: Bow-Ties and Cummerbunds
The Bow Tie is the traditional neckwear of choice for the School Prom together worn together with a Cummerbund.
We have a large choice of different coloured Bow-Ties and Cummerbund sets available from the Peter Posh Promwear collection to go with your Prom Tuxedo.
A cummerbund (also sometimes referred to as a waistband) is a stylish, elegant broad pleated sash worn around the waist, and should be worn in conjunction with a matching coloured bow-tie.
The Cummerbund is a garment of English origin, and was apparently first worn by British military personnel in Colonial India as an alternative to the waistcoat and had upward-facing pleats for storage of personal items such as tickets.
These days however, the Cummerbund is purely a garment of aesthetic value, helping to provide an interesting and stylish transition between the waistband and the shirt.
Prom Wear: Ruche Ties
Alternatively, you may prefer to wear a Ruche Tie with your Prom jacket.
Ruche ties are a very elegant and traditional alternative to the bow-tie, and should be worn with a waistcoat.
Prom Wear accessories: The finishing touches...
Once you've decided on your perfect prom wear outfit, it's time to add the finishing touches.
Paying attention to even the smallest of details can make a huge difference in your overall look, and of course it's important that you look and feel your best.
We recommend accessorising your prom wear with a pair of stylish cuff-links, of which we usually have a selection of available in-store.
A breast-pocket handkerchief can also look rather stunning when added in conjunction with a matching coloured bow-tie and cummerbund set.
Finally we'd suggest a visit to your barber / hairdresser about a week or so ahead of your big night so as not to be rushing around at the 'eleventh hour' and would also recommend that you lightly apply a little cologne before setting out for your Prom night.
Whilst the School Prom is a fun social celebration, it is likely to be a night that you will look back on in fondness for many years to come, so it's important to make sure you look and feel your best in an elegant and stylish prom wear outfit so you it is a worry off your mind on the big night and you are free to enjoy what should be a special evening.
More about the School Prom and its origins...
The School Prom is the social highlight in the calendar of the school year, and is an annual celebration for pupils / students, held at the end of the academic year at schools (typically at school leaving age, and at the end of sixth form education), and are also known to take place at some colleges and universities. The word prom itself comes from the word 'promenade', meaning a leisurely walk, especially one taken in a public place as a social activity.
School Proms originate from North American culture, as can be seen in many popular American movies over the last few decades, but have also become a popular feature in schools in England, particularly over the last decade.
The event itself will typically consist of a mixture of dancing, dining, socialising and sometimes the crowning of a Prom King and Prom Queen, although this latter aspect is not usually a feature of School proms here in England. This event is also sometimes referred to as the Leavers' Ball, Leavers Dinner or Leavers Do, but its becoming more commonly known as the school prom here in the United Kingdom also.
The School Prom is a formal attire social function with the formal attire for this event commonly known and referred to as promwear which is typically hired, and gives young men and women the chance to dress in an elegant and sophisticated manner - often for the first time on their approach to adulthood, and is a celebration marking the end of one chapter and the beginning of another in a young man's life, so its a good idea to make sure its a really good night to remember for all the right reasons.
